A 37-year-old man has appeared in court charged with preparing for acts of terrorism, a week after he was arrested at London Stansted airport.

Aweys Faqey, from north London, spoke only to confirm his name at the hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court, following his arrest on 23 May.

Mr Faqey will remain in custody until an Old Bailey hearing on 9 June.

His arrest was not connected to last week's suicide bomb attack in Manchester, Scotland Yard has said.

Under the charges, Dutch national Mr Faqey allegedly obtained or applied for cash loans and bought tickets to fly to Turkey.

Mr Faqey, who has lived in the UK since 2013, also allegedly went to Stansted Airport in possession of $700 (£545) and €400 (£348).
