Fraudsters claiming to be refunding council tax payments are targeting householders in County Durham.
Durham County Council said they were contacting residents saying they were due a substantial rebate and asking for bank details.
When challenged by one recipient the caller hung up.
The council said it would never ask for bank details over the telephone and warned people to be vigilant. It also urged victims to call the police.
