Second arrest over Darlington street attack

A second 15-year-old has been arrested in connection with an assault which left a man fighting for his life.

The 42-year-old suffered a serious chest injury when he was attacked near St Thomas Aquinas Church in North Road, Darlington, early on Saturday.

Afterwards, a number of young men administered first aid on the direction of an NHS operator, and attempted to flag down passing motorists.

An extension to the detention of the first youth arrested has been granted.

The victim has undergone surgery and remains in hospital where his condition is described as "serious but stable".

Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack, at about 0200 BST, and are particularly keen to speak to any of the motorists who were passing by at the time.
