Man charged over Spennymoor shooting

Police have charged a man in connection with a double shooting in an alleyway in County Durham.

Two men were shot in Spennymoor on Saturday. One, aged 59, remains in hospital, but was not seriously hurt.

A 43-year-old man appeared before magistrates in Newton Aycliffe, charged with Section 18 wounding.

Six men who were arrested in connection with the investigation have now been bailed pending further inquiries, police said.

Five of them, aged between 18 and 32, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and a 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempting to assist an offender.

The second man to be shot, aged 40, suffered a minor injury and did not require hospital treatment.
