A man has been jailed for 16 years for killing a neighbour in County Durham.

Mark Sweeney, 37, was found with stab wounds in Hollowfield, Chilton, on 26 June and was taken to hospital but later died.

James Thornley, 43, was charged with murder, which he denied, but a jury at Teesside Crown Court failed to reach a verdict.

Thornley's plea of guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of provocation was accepted.

During the trial, he claimed he had acted in self-defence after being provoked.

Mr Sweeney was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with multiple injuries. He had surgery but died later.
