Icy weather causes road problems in County Durham

  • Published

Snow and ice have been causing problems on the roads in County Durham.

Police said that many drivers seemed to have been ill-prepared for the wintry conditions, and there had been a series of minor accidents.

Problems were worst during rush hour, and in the Bishop Auckland, Consett, Stanley and Spennymoor areas.

A series of collisions involving more than 10 vehicles led to the closure of the Cornsay to Tow Law road. It has since re-opened.

Drivers are being urged to drive according to the conditions and make extra time for their journeys.
