Frozen pipes close swimming pools in Chester

A sports centre in Cheshire has had to close its swimming pools for up to four weeks after heating equipment broke in the cold weather.

Three heating coils at Chester's Northgate Arena burst, due to frost damage.

Both pools and the changing rooms have been closed and some fitness classes have been moved to other areas of the building.

Cheshire West and Chester Council apologised for the disruption.

Councillor Richard Short, executive member for culture and recreation, said: "Specialists have been contacted and the three heating coils will have to be specially manufactured which could take up to four weeks.

"In the meantime we have been trying to contact as many people as possible who use the pools."
