Sledgehammer raid on Southend jewellers

Two men, one armed with a sledgehammer, have robbed a jewellers in a "smash and grab" raid in the centre of Southend in Essex.

At about 0910 GMT two men pulled up outside Ernest Jones in the High Street on a motorcycle.

The motorcycle passenger got off the bike and broke the glass of a display case with a short-handled sledgehammer and stole a number of watches.

He got back on the motorbike and left in the direction of Queens Road.

The men were both wearing motorcycle helmets, one was wearing a high visibility jacket carrying a sledgehammer and a holdall.

The value of the watches is not known at present.

Anyone with information has been asked to call Essex Police.
