Teesside canoeist dies in Northumberland weir accident

A Teesside canoeist died after getting into difficulties on a Northumberland river.

Emergency services were called to the weir by the Riding Mill pump station on the River Tyne at 1425 GMT on Saturday.

Andrew Weatherill, 33, from Hartlepool, was winched out of the canoe by the helicopter crew from RAF Boulmer. Police, ambulance, fire and air ambulance crews also attended.

He was pronounced dead at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
