Broken pipe cuts off gas supply to 1,000 Suffolk homes

More than 1,000 homes in a Suffolk village lost gas supplies on Thursday night after contractors hit a pipeline.

National Grid said that to repair the pipe, damaged by contractors not involved in gas work, the supply had to be turned off to Framlingham.

Extras staff were brought in from Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and the East Midlands as homes would have to be checked before supplies were restored.

National Grid said it was too early to say exactly when this would be.

An incident centre has been set up at Sir Robert Hitcham School where staff can issue updates.

"Alternative heating and cooking facilities are available as well as help for the elderly or disabled," a spokesman said.

"Those with a long-term illness, small children or people with other special needs could be catered for."
