Chemical fire causes Worcestershire homes to be evacuated

A major fire in a farm building containing chemicals led to homes being evacuated in Worcestershire.

A spokesman for Hereford and Worcester Fire Service said 15 homes were evacuated and a 200m exclusion zone was set up after a car fire spread to a farm building.

Firefighters were called to The Croft, in Green Street, Kempsey at 1710 GMT.

No injuries were reported and the spokesman said the cordon was lifted at about 2100 GMT.

Up to nine appliances were in attendance at the height of the blaze, with black smoke spreading across the nearby M5 motorway at one point.

The spokesman added 23 people had to leave their homes with four requiring overnight accommodation.

He said the fire was out by 1930 GMT.
