Barnard Castle woman dies as car hits tree on A167

A County Durham motorist died when her car hit a tree in North Yorkshire.

The 20-year-old, from Barnard Castle, was in a Vauxhall Corsa which left the A167 at Newsham Grange on Monday night. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car's passenger, a 20-year-old man from Stockton was seriously hurt and remains in a stable condition.

The drivers of two other cars which were travelling with the Corsa were arrested in connection with the incident and later bailed.

Police believe the three cars had travelled from Thirsk to Northallerton earlier in the evening, and at the time of the collision were en route back to Thirsk.

North Yorkshire Police have appealed for two cyclists who were on the A167 around the time - about 22:00 BST - to come forward.

It is thought they, and motorists held up at the railway crossing on Boroughbridge Road, might have vital information about how the vehicles were being driven prior to the crash.
