West Midlands Twitter gritter coverage widened
Councils across the West Midlands have joined forces to boost a gritting alert service to help drivers setting out in icy conditions.
"Twitter gritter" will see alerts from local authorities and the Highways Agency posted on Twitter using the hashtag #wmgrit.
The alerts will cover Walsall, Dudley, Solihull, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Sandwell, Staffordshire and Shropshire.
The aim is to make it easier for people to see which roads have been treated.
The system was previously only used by Birmingham City Council.
Councillor Timothy Huxtable, Birmingham City Council cabinet member for transport, environment and regeneration, said: "Our gritting crews are on hand throughout the winter to keep the city moving and for the last two years we've tweeted gritting information to keep the public informed.
"I know from feedback that our gritting alerts do prove extremely useful and reassuring and this is the logical next step.
"By working closely with colleagues across the region we can pull together information covering roads treated by a number of West Midlands authorities."
