A 36-year-old man accused of murdering a man in Middlesbrough and a woman in North Yorkshire has appeared in court via videolink.

The case against James Allen, of Lothian Road, Middlesbrough, was adjourned at the town's Crown Court.

The body of Colin Dunford, 81, was found at his home on 23 April; Julie Davison, 50, was found at her Whitby home two days later.

Both had head injuries. Mr Allen did not plead to two counts of murder.

He has also been charged with rape, grievous bodily harm, false imprisonment and witness intimidation.

The hearing was adjourned until 6 July and he will remain in custody.
