A missing 15-year-old Sussex girl who travelled to France is believed to be with a 30-year-old teacher from her school, the BBC understands.

Megan Stammers, from Eastbourne, is thought to have crossed the Channel with Jeremy Forrest, a maths teacher at Bishop Bell C of E School.

Megan was reported missing when she failed to turn up for school on Friday.

Sussex Police said they were following several lines of inquiry following an appeal on Saturday.

Megan was spotted using a Dover to Calais ferry crossing on Friday evening.

'Very worried'

The pair are believed to be travelling in France in a Ford Fiesta, registration GJ08 RJO, belonging to Mr Forrest, who is from Ringmer, near Lewes.

Ch Insp Jason Tingley, of Sussex Police, said: "We are investigating several lines of inquiry and are grateful for the support and co-operation from Megan's family and friends.

"We are at a critical stage of the investigation.

"We have previously circulated the details of Megan, Jeremy Forrest and the vehicle we believe they are in."

The force said it did not believe Megan was at risk but appealed for her to make contact with her family.

On Saturday her father, Martin, said: "We just want Megan to make contact with us. We are worried and miss her terribly - please get in touch Megan."

Megan is said to be 5ft 6ins, slim and has long dark brown hair. She was last seen wearing a white vest top and a silver necklace.
