An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of a kayaker in North Yorkshire.

Matthew Baird-Parker was pulled from Arkle Beck at Reeth on Sunday by firefighters, but died later in hospital.

The 36-year-old, from Liversedge, West Yorkshire, had become trapped in debris in the swollen river.

Mr Baird-Parker's family said he was an experienced kayaker who had died doing something he loved.

North Yorkshire Police had been notified of a man in the water just after 13:00 GMT on Sunday.

The area was searched by members of the Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and an RAF air support unit.

Mr Baird-Parker was pulled from the water at 14:30 GMT and was taken by air ambulance to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.
