Funeral for Cockburn family killed in Laceby crash

The funeral has taken place of five members of a County Durham family killed in a car crash near Grimsby.

Angela Cockburn, her husband David, his two daughters Carley Ann and Bethany and Bethany's daughter Lacie, died on the A18 on 12 April.

The family, from Ouston, near Chester-le-street, were on their way to a dance competition, when their car collided with a lorry.

A private service was held at St John's Church in Birtley.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral to listen to the service outside of the church which was relayed on loud speakers.

The service was led by a relative of the Cockburn family, Rev Karen Fenwick.

Carley Ann and Bethany were due to take part in a dance competition at Butlins holiday resort in Skegness when the family's Nissan Primera was in collision with a lorry near the Oaklands Hotel on the A18 in Laceby.

Three family members died at the scene and two others died in hospital. The lorry driver suffered minor injuries.

The family were travelling to the competition with friends who were in other cars.

Carley Ann and Bethany were members of a dance school in Washington, Tyne and Wear. Lacie was nearly two-years-old.

Investigations into the crash are continuing and an inquest is to be held later.
