Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has bought a Lancashire golf course with the intention of developing it into the football club's new training ground.

A club spokesman said work could begin on converting the 89-acre (36 hectare) Charnock Richard Golf Club near Chorley "by the end of the year".

A planned development at nearby Wrightington will no longer go ahead.

The spokesman added that the course would "operate as normal" for the remainder of the current golf season.

He said that all competitions and fixtures would be honoured.

He added that the club would now be working closely with Chorley Council to "discuss planning permission" for the site.

The Charnock Richard club was established in 1994 on converted farmland and has a clubhouse made from the original farmhouse.
