Thousands of County Durham street lights replaced

Work has started replacing 45,000 street lights throughout County Durham in a bid to save money.

The county council said replacing them with white LED lights would save £24m over 25 years because they were cheaper to power and greener.

A spokesman for the council said it was also planning to dim lights between certain hours in less populated areas.

LED lights produce fewer carbon emissions and have a longer lifespan, the council said.
