A man who died swimming in a reservoir in Cumbria was visiting from Pakistan, police have revealed.

Two people were reported to be in trouble in Thirlmere, near Keswick, on Wednesday, prompting a search by emergency services.

Muhammad Bilal Bhaty, 28, who was visiting the area with his family, died at the scene.

His 22-year-old sister was rescued from the water by bystanders, who performed CPR until the air ambulance arrived.

She was airlifted to hospital and has since been discharged.

Andy Dalton, from the Great North Air Ambulance, paid tribute to the people on the shore.

He said: "They got her out of the water and she wasn't breathing at the time, so they started CPR on her at which point she started breathing again.

"So the bystanders must take a lot of credit for saving that woman's life."

Cumbria Police said the difficulty the pair experienced was due to the cold temperature of the water.
