A major route north was closed for most of Saturday after 1,000 litres of diesel were spilled on the A1.

The Highways Agency urged drivers to find an alternative route north of Peterborough after closing the road near Stamford in Lincolnshire.

The spillage at about 23:00 BST on Friday badly damaged the tarmac and repairs were not completed until Saturday evening.

A 35 mile diversion through Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire was in place.

Specialist cleaners had to clean up the spill before the carriageway could be inspected for damage.

A spokeswoman for the Highways Agency said a stretch of the road needed resurfacing.
