Clacton baby assault man jailed

A man has been jailed for 15 years for causing "life-changing injuries" to a 10-week-old baby girl in Essex.

The 33-year-old from the Clacton area was convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent at Chelmsford Crown Court in July.

A 25-year-old woman had previously admitted neglect and she is due to be sentenced at a later date.

Essex Police said the injuries would affect the girl for the rest of her life.

'Heinous crime'

Police were contacted after the baby was admitted to Colchester General Hospital in 2013.

The court ordered that the defendants could not be named to protect the identity of the baby and other witnesses.

Det Sgt Kerrie Katinas said: "This heinous crime committed against an innocent, defenceless baby left her with life changing injuries.

"It has been an incredibly emotional case and I am thankful to all the witnesses who attended court after [the defendant] failed to take responsibility for his actions."

In addition to the 15 years in jail, the defendant who was also found guilty of cruelty, will spend five years on licence.
