Durham County Council plans 20mph limit outside schools

A 20mph speed limit could be introduced outside some schools in County Durham in an effort to reduce accidents.

Durham County Council is considering part-time limits outside 33 schools, where the highest number of accidents involving children have occurred.

Only three such zones have been created in the county over the past 10 years, in Seaham, Durham City and Ferryhill.

The authority said 86% of accidents involving children happened within a 600m (1,968ft) radius of a school.

A council spokesman said the proposals would involve about 10% of schools in the county and could also include traffic-calming measures.

The highlighted schools include seven in Bishop Auckland, six in the Chester-le-Street area, five in Seaham and four in Consett.

Councillors are due to consider the plan on 17 December.
