UK clay brick company Hanson Building Products sold for £900m

One of the UK's largest clay brick producers has been sold by its German owner as part of a deal worth £900m.

Maidenhead-based Hanson Building Products employs nearly 1,500 staff at 18 production sites in the UK.

It has nine brick plants, including at Measham and Desford in Leicestershire, Wilnecote in Staffordshire and Kirton in Nottinghamshire.

The UK business sale to private equity firm Lone Star is expected to conclude in the first quarter of next year.

It is part of a wider deal that includes extensive operations in North America.

The company also has operations in Derby and Hoveringham, near Nottingham.

Worldwide, the company - which has been part of HeidelbergCement since 2007 - employs 4,621 people at 107 manufacturing plants.

The UK building products division also makes the Thermalite brand of aircrete blocks, as well as block paving, precast concrete products and structural cladding systems.

Other Hanson operations in aggregates, asphalt and cement, will remain as part of HeidelbergCement.

Hanson was bought by HeidelbergCement for £8bn in 2007, having been built into a multinational in the 1970s and 1980s by founder Lord Hanson and his business partner, Lord White.
