A Cheshire arts company has appointed a new artistic director ahead of its move to a new £37m cultural centre.

Chester Performs have hired Alex Clifton, the founder and current artistic director of Chester's Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre.

He said he was "delighted to join the endlessly creative team".

The RE:NEW arts centre - previously the city's 1936 Odeon building - is due to open in 2016, bringing together music, theatre, dance, literature and film.

Mr Clifton, who was born in Chester, has worked with theatres and opera companies including the National, Old Vic, English National Opera and the Oxford Playhouse.
