Bedford hospital axe attack man detained
A man who took an axe into a Bedfordshire hospital's Accident and Emergency department has been detained in a mental health unit.
Derek Hunt, 47, of Beechdale Road, Bedford, waved the axe and confronted a member of staff at Bedford Hospital South Wing on 5 November.
Hunt, who previously pleaded guilty to affray, was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Monday.
Psychiatrists would decide on Hunt's release, Judge Jeffrey Burke QC said.
"The offence was dreadful and must have caused really serious trauma to the girl behind the desk when you produced the axe and started waving it around," he said.
"A substantial sentence of imprisonment would have been inevitable but for your mental illness."
