Teenager dies during police car chase in Hertfordshire

An investigation is under way after a teenager died when the car he was a passenger in crashed during a police pursuit in Hertfordshire.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is looking into the incident in Royston on Monday.

The IPCC said officers in a marked car began the pursuit on the A505, when two cars performed U-turns in front of them and one, a Citroen Saxo, sped off.

It overturned in Royston town centre and the 16-year-old died at the scene.

A man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Hertfordshire Police referred the incident to the IPCC because the Saxo was being pursued by a police car prior to the collision.

Investigators were deployed to the scene to begin collecting evidence and start an independent investigation.

Hertfordshire Police have begun a parallel investigation into the fatal collision.

Three teenagers have been arrested and bailed as part of their inquiries.
