More tests over Bedford taxi driver death

More tests are to be carried out after a post-mortem examination on a Bedford taxi driver failed to find the cause of his death.

Mehar Dhariwal, 61, of Kempston, Bedfordshire, was assaulted at the AGS Taxi rank in St Peters Street in the early hours of 22 January.

He was treated in hospital and discharged, then re-admitted five days later. He died on 29 January.

Police said a man was charged with assault before the taxi driver's death.

Det Ch Insp Sean O'Neil said: "Now that circumstances have changed, it is only right we establish the exact cause of this man's death and look at the events that preceded it.

"I would like to reassure the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased that we are doing everything possible to establish exactly what happened."

The 26-year-old Bedford man charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm has been remanded in custody.
