Woman dies in hospital after assault in Bedford flat

A 42-year-old woman who suffered serious head injuries in an attack in Bedford died a week later in hospital.

Yong Li Qiu died at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge on Sunday. She never regained consciousness after the assault in Ashburnham Road on 18 March.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out later this week to establish the cause of death.

A 46-year-old man from Bedford has been charged with attempted murder and remains in custody.

Police are reviewing this charge and detectives have been making house-to-house inquiries over the past few days, a spokesman said.

Police want to trace a white man who was approached by a Chinese woman in her thirties as he walked along Ashburnham Road on 18 March.

"The woman was another occupant of the flat who ran outside to summon help for the victim," the spokesman said.

"She was asking for help and for people to call the police and recalls that the man pointed her in the direction of a nearby phone box."

Detectives would like to find this man as he may have information that could assist the inquiry.

They have also appealed for any other witnesses to contact them.
