Pilot 'critical' after light plane crash in Ashwell

A pilot is being treated for "life-threatening injuries" after his light aircraft crashed into a field in Hertfordshire.

The man, on board the one-seater plane, was hurt when the plane came down in Ashwell, near Baldock, on Friday.

Emergency services went to the field in Newnham Way at about 18:30 BST.

The pilot was treated at the scene and taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. No one else was injured, police said.

Newnham Way was temporarily closed to allow the ambulance service, East Anglian Air Ambulance, fire service and police to deal with the incident.

The fire service said the man was not trapped in the aircraft and its fuel tanks did not present a hazard.

The Air Accident Investigation Branch has been informed, police confirmed.
