Kempston weir rescued canoeist seriously ill
A canoeist is in intensive care at Bedford Hospital after almost drowning in a weir.
The man, believed to be 47, had fallen out of his canoe near Mill Lane, Kempston, att 11:50 BST.
The East of England Ambulance Service said its medics and fire crews pulled the man from the water and treated him for the effects of near-drowning.
Andy Hampton, of Kempston ambulance station, said it was a "very diffcult rescue" due to very steep banks.
"We would like to take this opportunity to warn people of the dangers of turbulent weirs and water.
"This man was an experienced canoeist and knew this stretch of water but that was still not enough to prevent him getting into trouble."
