A woman has been injured in a shooting in Luton town centre.

Officers were called to Russell Street, at the junction with Wellington Street, at about 14:05 GMT following a report of gun shots being fired.

A woman in her mid 30s was taken to hospital with shrapnel embedded in her hand and has since been released following treatment, police said.

A spokesman said there was no immediate threat to the public, but police remained at the scene.

The roads were closed while a forensic examination was carried out.

Police said the victim was with her partner when she was injured after it is believed the two got involved in an argument with two men.

The men are described as black, with one wearing black sunglasses and both of them wearing hats.

The woman is assisting officers with their enquiries.

Police are trying to trace a white car, seen heading up Russell Street after the incident.
