A man, who police said was almost four times over the legal alcohol limit for driving, was stopped while going the wrong way down the A1(M) near Hatfield.

The car was pulled over by officers as it travelled south on the northbound section of the motorway at 02:30 BST.

They were in the "right place at the right time", Beds, Cambs & Herts Roads Policing Unit wrote on Twitter.

A 33-year-old from Waltham Abbey has been detained on suspicion of driving a vehicle while unfit through alcohol.

He remains in custody.

The legal alcohol limit for drivers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
