'Lightning strike' leaves 8,000 Berkshire homes cut off

A lightning strike is believed to have caused a power cut which left 8,000 homes without electricity in Berkshire.

The blackout affected properties around junction 12 of the M4 in Theale and Tilehurst earlier.

A spokeswoman for Southern Electric said engineers had managed to quickly re-route supplies to all but 800 homes.

The firm said the remaining properties were reconnected by 1900 BST. The spokeswoman said it is thought a power line was hit by the lightning strike.
