A Berkshire council is reminding tenants to continue paying their rent over the holiday period even if Christmas has stretched their budgets.

Slough Borough Council's campaign, now in its third year, aims to get the message across that paying rent should be people's top priority.

The council said it will make every effort to help residents who run into financial difficulties.

Residents having problems are urged to talk to council staff.

Emma Gill, the council's rent recovery team manager, said: "As economic times get tough, it's more important than ever to keep a tight rein on household budgets.

"This is the third year we have run this campaign and we are well aware of the difficulties facing some of our tenants and we will do all we can to work with them to make sure they don't miss any payments."

The council said in the past 12 months it has been forced to evict 15 families for rent arrears.
