Kids and Family

Head to Beale Park in Lower Basildon for a pond dipping and dragonfly survey, held on Tuesday 2 August between 14:00 and 16:00 BST. The sessions will operate on a first come, first served basis and parental supervision will be required.

Take part in a Wonderful Wool Day at Shaw House in Church Road, Shaw, RG14 2DR on Wednesday 3 August. Celebrate all things woolly with a day of fleece-filled family activities, including spinning, knitting and felt making. No need to book, just drop in from 11:00 to 15:30. Activities suitable for ages four plus.

Enjoy a reptile and amphibian experience at the Nature Discovery Centre in Muddy Lane, Thatcham on Thursday 4 August. Sessions will be held at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00. Tickets cost £4.50 per person. Booking essential. Call 01635 874381 for more information.

Nature and Outdoors

The Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) will take part in the Earley Green Fair at Maiden Erlegh nature reserve on Saturday 6 August between 10:00 and 15:00. BBOWT will have a food stall and offer guided walks. Meet at Maiden Erlegh Nature Reserve off Beech Lane, Earley, RG6 5QB. Grid Ref: SU 745 710.

In celebration of its 25th Anniversary, the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club will open its doors to the public for a free match on Saturday 6 August. The polo club is situated in North Street, Winkfield, Windsor. Gates open at midday.

Take part in a nature walk led by a warden or a member of the Reading and District Natural History Society at Basildon Park in Lower Basildon, RG8 9NR. The walks will take place at 10:30 until midday on Friday 5 August.

Enjoy a canal trip on the Rose of Hungerford Barge along the Kennet & Avon Canal. The boat departs at 14:30 on Wednesday 3 August, Saturday 6 August and Sunday 7 August, returning by 17:00. Wednesdays and Sundays in August also have a shorter trip starting at 11:30 returning by 13:00. Trips leave from the Canal Walk, Hungerford, RG17 0EQ.

Arts and Culture

The Windsor Globe Summer Outdoor Shakepeare Festival will run in Alexandra Gardens, Windsor until Sunday 7 August. The festival will include a mix of classic Shakespeare, community children's theatre and stand-up comedy, as well as a Much Ado About Nothing and Wind in the Willows Gala Evening. Head to the Museum of Reading in Blagrave Street to see a new exhibition on contemporary Mod culture on Friday 29 July. Photographer Dean Chalkley has captured a range of 21st century Mods to complement the museum's current exhibition on 1960s Mod culture in Reading. Museum opening times are Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 16:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 16:00.


Enjoy the Rhodes Piano Trio as part of the Norden Farm arts centre's summer concert series. The performance will be held at Norden Farm arts centre in Altwood Road, Maidenhead on Thursday 4 August from 19:30 to 21:00. Tickets cost £11.

The Step Up Festival is taking place on Saturday 6 August and Sunday 7 August at the Facebar, Chatham Street, Reading. Acts include Attention Thieves and Adam Barnes. Doors open at 14:00.

Red Kite andMidi Midis will perform at Oakford Social Club in Blagrave Street, Reading on Saturday 6 August from 20:00 - 02:00.

Something Different

Try out a "Sound Bath" in Caversham with Mel Diamond and Heather Parker. Enjoy singing bowls, shakers, drums, chimes and voice. The event will run from 19:30 to 21:30 on Wednesday 3 August and will cost £10 for the day. It will be held at the Healing Shed, 135a Queens Road, Caversham.

The Newbury Classic Vehicle Show will be held in the members enclosure car park of Newbury Racecourse. The show attracts a wide variety of classic cars, commercial vehicles, motor-bikes and other unusual classic vehicles. The show will run from 10:00 to 16:00 on Sunday 7 August. Tickets cost £5.
