A stolen memorial statue to four Berkshire schoolboys who died on a skiing trip is to be replaced.

An identical bronze statue will be made by the original sculptor Eunice Goodman following the theft earlier this month from Ray Mill Island, Maidenhead.

A spokesman for the families of the four Altwood School pupils, who died in 1988, said they were "really touched by the support of so many people".

A man has been arrested and charged in connection with the theft.

Altwood School, in Maidenhead, has launched a fundraising drive and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead will underwrite the project.

A council spokesperson said the new statue should be in place at the original site by June 2012.
