The leader of West Berkshire Council, Graham Jones, is to step down as leader next month.

The Conservative group member has held the post since May 2005.

Mr Jones, a pharmacist, will hand over the position at a council meeting on 27 September to allow him to focus more time on his business.

He will continue to represent Lambourne Valley ward and hopes to pursue his interest in health services as they begin to integrate with the council.

Councillor Jones said: "I have been privileged to enjoy a fantastic seven years in post.

"I have been truly fortunate to be supported by many talented and hard working colleagues, both officers and members."

"I am proud of what has been achieved in my time as Leader. We have kept to a minimum the burden on the council taxpayer."

A new leader will be recommended to councillors during next month's meeting.
