Reading launches 'Play Streets' children's safety scheme

Residents in Reading can apply to temporarily close residential roads to allow their children to play safely.

The borough council is trialling a Play Streets scheme, which closes streets for a few hours every fortnight.

The application is free but residents will be responsible for appropriate signage and marshalling the closure.

Applicants need to obtain signatures from at least two-thirds of residents who live on the street for their bids to be considered.

A Play Street can be created for up to three hours, on any day of the week, and up to once every fortnight.

A council spokesman said it could also benefit adults who could "get to know neighbours they've not met before".
