Reading teenager rape inquiry 'discontinued'

Police investigating a report of rape in Reading say there is clear evidence that no rape took place.

A 19-year-old woman reported being approached by a group of men before being attacked near the University of Reading campus in the early hours of Wednesday.

Thames Valley Police said the woman was being supported but the investigation had been discontinued.

It said it had thoroughly investigated the circumstances of the allegation.

Det Sgt Carl Bradford said: "There is clear evidence that there was no offence of rape. The complainant is being supported.

"I would like to stress that no-one should hesitate in coming forward if they have been a victim of crime of any sort.

"Thames Valley Police will support victims and witnesses throughout investigations in an attempt to prosecute offenders."
