A man accused of murdering a mother-of-two has died in prison on the day of a court appearance, police have said.

John Wright, 32, was due to appear at Reading Crown Court, accused of strangling 25-year-old Janine Bowater.

The Prison Service said Mr Wright, of Hollands, Thatcham, was on remand at Bullingdon Prison, Oxfordshire.

"As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman," it added.

Ms Bowater, described by her family as "amazing" and "loving", was found dead in Park Avenue, Thatcham, Berkshire, on Tuesday.

A post-mortem examination found she died from compression of the neck.
