Vandals have toppled gravestones and daubed graffiti on a Birmingham church.

West Midlands police have described the damage to St. Mary's Church on Hamstead Road, in Handsworth, as "despicable".

It is thought the the crime happened some time between Friday and Sunday, a spokesman said.

Forensic examiners have visited the site and officers have increased patrols in the area. Anyone with information should contact police.

Insp Danielle Corfield said: "This is a despicable act which strikes at the heart of the Handsworth community.

"Many people from the area, including those who have loved-ones interred at the graveyard, will be very upset by this incident.

"I would like to assure them that we are doing everything we can to find those responsible and would ask for the support of local people in bringing those responsible to justice."
