Birmingham homes evacuated over gas fears after fire

Homes within a 25m radius of a fire in Birmingham have been evacuated because of fears of a potential gas explosion.

The fire began at about 1330 BST in a garden shed where gas bottles had been stored in Kenelm Road, Small Heath.

A cordon was erected and Birmingham City Council opened a rest centre in Saltley Leisure Centre, Broadway Avenue, for people affected.

People living in some homes in Floyer Road and Kenelm Road were still unable to return at 2030 BST.

A police spokesman said: "The risk to residents due to gas cylinders which were unsafe following a fire has been reassessed by specially trained staff and the vast majority of people living in the area can now return to their normal daily lives.

"A small number of houses will need to remain evacuated for safety reasons."

West Midlands Police and fire investigators are trying to establish the cause of the blaze.
