A proposed £15m leisure, health and social care centre in Sandwell has been given the go ahead by the government.

Work is due to start within the next few months on the Portway Lifestyle Centre, on the site of the existing Oldbury Leisure Centre.

A spokesman for the Labour-controlled Sandwell Council said the centre will have specialist facilities to help disabled people.

The centre is due to open early in 2013 and will include a GP surgery.

He said the money comes after a government review of all health and social care building projects using Department of Health money.

Facilities at the lifestyle centre will include a four court sports hall, hydrotherapy pool, cafe, sensory garden, climbing wall, dance studio and fitness suite and a full-size artificial grass football pitch.

The council is working with Sandwell Primary Care Trust, Sandwell Local Improvement Trust and Sandwell Leisure Trust, which will run the centre.
