Birmingham stabbing leaves boy dead

A 17-year-old boy has died after being stabbed in Birmingham.

Police were called to Coventry Road in the area of Small Heath Retail Park at about 1700 BST on Wednesday.

The teenager was hurt in an argument with another young man on the retail park, or on a stretch of road between Morrisons and the Watering Hole island, police believe.

A murder inquiry was started after the teenager died at about midnight. Police think he was targeted deliberately.

He had been taken to hospital with critical injuries.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted in due course, police have said.

Det Ch Insp Sab Johal, from West Midlands Police, said: "Our inquiries to date lead us to believe that the teenager was specifically targeted."

The boy's family has been informed and will be supported by family liaison officers.

The West Midlands force said it knew the stabbing happened in or around Coventry Road, which would have been extremely busy as the rush hour was starting.

Officers have asked for witnesses to contact them.
