Walsall Council leader survives by single vote

The Conservative leader of Walsall Council has won a ballot to remain in charge by a single vote.

Mike Bird was supported by five Liberal Democrat councillors, who voted with the Conservatives, after a motion was tabled by Labour councillors.

Three independent councillors chose to abstain.

After elections earlier in the month, no party secured overall control of the council, although Labour became the largest single group.

Previously tied on 27 seats, Labour gained one councillor, while the Conservatives lost three.
