Police have been granted a further 36 hours to question a 20-year-old man arrested after a man died in a fire at a block of flats in Willenhall.

The man was arrested on suspicion of committing arson with intent to endanger life following the fire in Southey Close on Monday morning.

Emergency services had to evacuate about 50 people from their homes.

West Midlands Police said the fire had spread to the flats from a wheelie bin found next to the building.

It said the man who died at the scene had yet to be formally identified but a post-mortem examination would take place on Wednesday morning.

A number of people had to be rescued from the flats after the fire started at 02:15 BST.
