Kaysley Smithen: Indefinite hospital order for killing mother

A 21-year-old man has been given an indefinite hospital order at Birmingham Crown Court after being found guilty of killing his mother with a weights bar.

Kaysley Smithen attacked his 46-year-old mother Janice in the home they shared at Spring Hill in Hockley, Birmingham on 2 July, 2012.

DS Harry May said Smithen had "a severe mental health problem" which made him paranoid against his own mother.

He had been ruled unfit to plead on a murder charge earlier in the trial.

A post mortem found Mrs Smithen had died from blunt force head injuries.

DS May said Smithen was being treated by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust, but had refused to accept he had a problem, or to take his medication.

"This resulted in his condition deteriorating very quickly where he started being more and more aggressive towards his mother," he said.
