More than 250 "outrageous and illegal" racers, who reached up to 120mph on a busy Birmingham A-road, have been given fines and driving bans.

A camera was hidden in road signals on the A47 in Nechells in a West Midlands Police operation last year.

Police have now said the footage helped to secure individual driving bans of up to two years and fines of up to £2,000.

The operation was launched following complaints about offences committed at night and on bank holidays.

PC Paul Bieliauskas said some of those who appeared in court had reached speeds of 120mph.

He added: "Their driving was outrageous and illegal - they posed a real danger to the public due to the manner of the driving and the speeds they reach and it was down to pure good luck that it didn't result in any fatal collisions."
