Solihull's Poplar Road shut by sewer collapse

A main road through Solihull town centre has been closed because of a collapsed sewer.

Buses are being diverted and motorists are being warned about delays following the closure of Poplar Road earlier on Wednesday.

The road is likely to remain closed for several days while repairs are carried out, the council said.

Severn Trent said it was alerted to the problem on Monday and its engineers were working to repair the pipe.

A spokesman said: "We received a call from Solihull County Council to report the issue on Monday.

"Our contractors, Amey, started investigatory work in the early hours the following day, which proved difficult due to a build up of silt because of the collapse.

"Later that morning a plan to dig down to reach the damaged pipe was agreed. We organised a road closure with the local council and started to complete the repair at 5am this morning."
